Dr. Susan Auerbach

Susan Auerbach is twice a suicide loss survivor, having lost both her father and younger son, Noah, to suicide. Her blog, Walking the Mourner’s Path After a Child’s Suicide, was the inspiration for the grief memoir, I’ll Write Your Name on Every Beach: A Mother’s Quest for Comfort, Courage, & Clarity After Suicide Loss (Jessica Kingsley Publishing, 2017). She is a member of the Los Angeles County Suicide Prevention Network and the Survivors After Suicide Advisory Board of Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services. She is trained in suicide awareness, gate-keeper crisis intervention, and bereavement group facilitation and does public speaking about youth suicide and suicide loss. She was also schooled in grief at 19 with the loss of her mother to cancer, participation in a pioneering death-and-dying support group, and two years spent studying the folk lament tradition of northern Greece. A Professor of Education at California State University, Northridge, Dr. Auerbach has a variety of academic, journalism, juvenile nonfiction, and arts-related publications. She lives with her husband, two dogs, four chickens, and a mountain view in Altadena, California.
