Are we surprised that women’s voices are not heard when our own tradition has struggled with determining when men should or should not hear a women’s voice? Today, we know that women are underrepresented in healthcare research and often diagnosed later than men with critical implications for treatment and outcome. In some institutional settings, women’s pain, both emotional and physical, often goes unheard and is less well treated than men’s pain. From diagnosis to treatment and beyond, illness is a shared human experience whose pain is magnified when it is borne alone, but whose cure or healing is eased when shared. Partners, families, workplaces are all affected as everyone loses when we don’t listen to women’s voices. Illness demands our thoughtful attention and response. What does our Jewish tradition offer to guide us? How do we as Jews be the best that we can be in challenging times?
